Dear Von Steuben Families and Community,

As many of you are aware, Dr. LeMone is transitioning to the position of Chief of High Schools for Network 14. This is truly a testament to her skills as a leader and to the amazing school model she has helped build at Von Steuben. Von Steuben has become an exemplar of high school excellence in our district. During her tenure, Dr. LeMone has led the school with dignity, pride, and dedication that is unparalleled, and her promotion is one that will better serve more schools, including Von Steuben.
For the past four years, I have been on the leadership team alongside Dr. LeMone. My heart is beaming with pride to continue to support our remarkable community in my new role. I know well what makes Von Steuben a special place, and I am honored to continue our work as Interim Principal. My primary goal is to make sure we have a positive and productive start to the school year in order to protect our current state of success and set the tone for continued growth.
To share a little more about myself, I am a native Chicagoan and attended Chicago Public Schools where I received a world-class education. I went to pursue my undergraduate degree to become a journalist and expose the injustices of the world. My path eventually brought me to education as an English teacher where I found my true calling for change. This school year will be my 20th year in education. Over the years, I have served in a variety of roles; however, I have found that leading a school and teachers to develop strong instructional practices has been the most fulfilling experience.
I value collaboration, positivity, and honesty as the keys to successful leadership. A good team member works to build consensus and helps others to ask the right questions to uncover what is most essential for progress. This is true for teachers, students, and community members, and especially our parents who are a child’s first teacher. The adage “it takes a village” is most true in our mission together to support youth. My personal development goal will be to put people first and to do what is best for growth and understanding for each member of the Von Steuben community.
While I am familiar with many of our parents and community members, I want to get to know each of you even better. To that end, I invite everyone in the Von Steuben community to reach out to me throughout this transition. Please do not hesitate to email me directly. I will have office hours established for face-to-face or phone meeting appointment slots to honor your time. I also look forward to meeting everyone at our upcoming events:

  • Wednesday, September 12th: Welcome Back Night (5:30 p.m. for 10th & 11th grades; 6:15 p.m. for 9th grade)
  • Thursday, September 13th: Senior College Financial Aid Night at 6 p.m.
  • Friday, September 28th: Coffee with the Principal at 8 a.m.

Together, we are Von Strong! Let’s have a great school year!
Ms. Jennifer Sutton
Interim Principal
