Dear Von Steuben parents and guardians,

By now, you are probably aware of the news of Wednesday’s shootings at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County, Florida. Our thoughts and condolences are with those who have been affected by this tragic incident.

Safety is our top priority at Von Steuben. To help ensure the safest possible school environment, we have worked to implement the following safety measures, which are already in place at our school:

A comprehensive Emergency Management Plan, as well as a School Safety Plan, tailored for our school community

Regular emergency drills to account for various crisis situations, including a situation that may involve an active shooter

Standard entry and access control protocols to manage the entry of students, staff, and visitors

Secured exterior doors, with cameras attached to each door

Trained Security and School Resource Officers (CPD) in the building

As all students enter the building, they go through security screening that includes the metal detector and x-ray machine

Main Entrance door is locked and visitors are buzzed in via the security desk camera and phone

Visitors must provide identification when entering the building

IDs are scanned using the Raptor system, which is connected to 911 and a visitor's ID is provided that must be worn while inside the building

A comprehensive camera system that is monitored by school staff in real time

Additionally, we ask our teachers to:

·      Keep classroom doors locked at all times

·      Follow the 10/10 rule – no hall passes the first/last ten minutes of class

·      Only allow hall passes in the school agenda books

Strengthening our safety procedures is an ongoing process, and we continue to work with the CPS Office of Safety and Security to help ensure we are doing everything possible to support a safe and healthy school environment.

Von Steuben has invested heavily in student wellness through mental health and social emotional supports for students that include:

·      Full time counseling services through Youth Guidance.

·      On site partnerships with Lutheran Social Services, Between Friends, and the Kedzie Center for individual and group counseling.

·      A behavior health team that receives referrals for students and coordinates services to ensure students’ social and emotional needs are met.

·      Six school counselors who serve students’ emotional, academic, and postsecondary needs.

If at any time you have questions or concerns, please contact the school immediately.  I can be reached at lalemone@cps.edu or 773.534.5100.  Our counseling, behavior health, and administrative teams as well as all Von Steuben staff are here to support your children, so please do not hesitate to reach out to any of us.

Thank you for your support.
